Without further ado, take a look!
A brief overview of the polish energy market
Poland’s energy market is undergoing significant changes.
It was historically dominated by coal. Traditionally, coal has been the mainstay of the Polish power sector, providing more than 70% of electricity generation in 2022. However, this is changing. Renewable energy sources (RES) are growing, and solar panel capacity has increased sevenfold since 2019. In March 2024, installed PV capacity reached a record 17.4 gigawatts, a 37.2 per cent increase over the same period last year. The government aims for renewables and nuclear power to replace coal by 2050.
Challenges and prospects. While Poland boasts one of the fastest-growing solar markets in the EU, it needs greater efforts across all sectors, including increased interconnection with Europe, to accelerate the transition. This transition will be much discussed in 2025 at conferences on the Polish energy market.
A short overview of the Baltic countries’ energy markets
The energy market in the Baltic countries is currently undergoing dynamic development and differs from the markets of neighbouring European and Nordic markets. Historically isolated from European electricity networks, the Baltic countries have faced challenges in synchronization and limited import/export opportunities. Moreover, the relatively small size of these markets has restricted competition and liquidity.
In line with EU legislation, the liberalization of the Baltic energy markets is underway, aiming to establish competitive electricity and gas markets. This transition is anticipated to enhance efficiency, lower prices, and attract investment.
A significant milestone in this process is the synchronization with the continental European power grid. By 2025, the Baltics power markets are planned to join the ENTSO-E network. This will facilitate both imports from and exports to other EU countries.
Within the Baltic region (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), there is a notable emphasis on renewable energy sources, with ambitious targets set to increase their share in the energy mix.
Notably, Latvia boasts hydro resources, while Lithuania has made substantial investments in wind energy. This strategic focus aims at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
However, akin to many emerging markets, the Baltic energy market faces several challenges:
- Fluctuations in energy prices
- The need to modernize infrastructure
- Ensuring equitable energy access for the population
- Achieving a balance between the development of renewable and conventional energy sources.
Addressing these challenges is pivotal for bolstering energy security, diminishing import reliance, and transitioning towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape. These pertinent topics are extensively discussed at numerous industry events scheduled for 2025.
If your company is an active player in these markets or you’re poised to make an entry, attending the following top 10 energy events promises profound insights into the dynamics of the power markets in this region.
